Lingxiang Fm
Type Locality and Naming
SE Hubei. Xie Jiarong erected the Lingxiang sandstone in 1924. The type locality for the designation is in Lingxiang of the Daye County of Hubei. The reference section is from Liangting-Sanjiaoshan of Jijia of the Daye County, Hubei.
Lithology and Thickness
The Lingxiang Formation is represented by a set of grayish yellow, yellowish green and purple red inland lacustrine clastic rocks with tuff, andesite basalt and andesite, which is divided into three members. Lower member is built up by calcareous siltstone, tuffaceous grit, feldspar-quartz sandstone, sandy conglomerate and conglomerate. Middle member is siltstone, fine sandstone, marl, sandstone and shale. Upper member is feldspar quartz sandstone, siltstone, shale, tuff with andesite basalt and andesite. It is essentially persistent in lithology and is 526-896.66 m in total thickness.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The base of the formation built up by a set of conglomerate is distinguished from the Yanshanian Fm. (Jurassic) porphyritic diorite. It shows an unconformable contact with the underlying strata.
Upper contact
The top is marked by the appearance of breccia tuff at the base of the Dasi Fm. It shows an unconformable contact with the overlying strata.
Regional extent
The formation occurs in Daye, Echeng, Wuchang and Puqi of southeast Hubei. In the Wulidun area of Wuchang there occur 8 mineable gypsum beds.

Fossils
The formation yields ostracods Cypridea magna, C. gunsulinensis, C. (Morinina) sp., C. (Bisulcocypridea) sp., Darwinula contracta; bivalves Sphaerium pujiangensis, S. jeholense; floras Frenelopsis parceramosa, Cupressinocladus hubeiensis, Ptiophyllum pecten.
